I was burned-out and ready to leave healthcare.
Back in 2015, I was working on a busy, acute care floor as a registered nurse. I was a few years into nursing and started noticing some changes in my personal and professional life. I had always loved nursing and appreciated the fact I would care for patients when they needed it most. But then things began to change.
I began to:
- Dread going to work.
- Lack empathy and compassion for my patients.
- Feel detached from my patients, my family, and even myself.
- No longer feel excited about working as a nurse.
- Feel mentally, emotionally, physically exhausted.
- Contemplate if I should leave healthcare.
I was completely burned-out and I didn’t even know it.
Until one day I went for my “30 minute, uninterrupted lunch break” (which we all know hopefully happens sometime before 3:30pm). As I was warming up my food, I noticed an article on the table.
The article was about compassion fatigue in healthcare providers. I started reading the article.
I check marked every single sign and symptom of compassion fatigue.
It was then that I realized I was burned-out.
Once I was finally able to put a label on what I had been feeling, I worked to overcome that burnout.
Overtime I implemented the necessary to steps to conquer my burnout. I implemented self-care. I set personal and professional boundaries. I left the toxic work-environment. I focused more on my own health and wellness. I completed the necessary mindset shifts.
Eventually I overcame the burnout.
I then applied and made it through a family nurse practitioner program. I had found a renewed passion for healthcare and taking care of patients. I was excited about this new role and how I could better help patient.
And then the COVID-19 pandemic hit.
Nurse practitioners were burned-out before COVID-19, but the pandemic greatly increased the rate of nurse practitioner burnout.
I took some time and reflected on my own burnout journey. I remembered how I had felt and that I didn’t think I would ever overcome the burnout.
So I decided to create The Burned-out Nurse Practitioner.
I now help overwhelmed nurse practitioners create a better work-life balance and overcome the burnout. I offer online courses, coaching, and support. I write about tips I used to overcome burnout.
I created a The Burned-out Nurse Practitioner Facebook group of equally burned-out nurse practitioners, ready to support one another.
